Nutella Chocolate Pancakes

Breakfast just got a whole lot nuttier and better!

Nutella is such a staple - I mean, it goes well with literally everything… ESPECIALLY breakfast! If you’re one of those people who will take a spoon straight to the Nutella jar (don’t worry, I’m there with you), this recipe is just what you need! Now you can shamelessly treat yourself to eating just as much Nutella but in a more socially acceptable way - with pancakes made of cake!

We don’t take breakfast lightly here at How To Cake It so these delicious pancakes are actually made of 10.5lbs of my Ultimate Chocolate Cake (go big or go home, am I right) and coated with a sweet chocolate ganache. Each layer is then stacked with loads of Nutella - which you can see oozing out from all edges, and the entire stack is covered in vanilla coated fondant bananas and Hershey kisses. Now I get why breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Banana Slices

We’re going to begin by making the banana slices that will top your pancakes off! Firstly, color your white fondant with buttercup yellow, golden yellow, and a bit of fog gel food coloring. Use a banana as a model then shape your fondant into an extra large banana.

Make indents along the banana with a sculpting tool then make indents running between the long lines.

Paint the banana with vanilla to add some brown to the skin (food coloring would be too dark). Let it dry.

Once your banana has dried, cut it into slices then turn the slices onto their sides and reshape them (round out) a little until you are satisfied. Texture the remaining fondant surface and paint with more vanilla.

Mix yellow, fog, and bright white gel food coloring with vanilla until you are satisfied with the color. Once you are, mix the color with some clear piping gel.

Use a sculpting tool to indent a Y formation and make indents in between. Fill the indents with vanilla then paint over again with the colored gel.

Continue to layer paints until you are happy.

Bake Your Cake

Line your pans with parchment paper and preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  Prepare 10.5lbs of Yo’s Ultimate Chocolate batter then divide evenly into the three pans. Bake each for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

TIP: Let your cakes cool completely in their pans before removing.

Level

Remove your cakes from their pans then level each.

Layer up!

Layer each of your cakes into 2 layers so that you have 6 layers.

Keep It Simple!

Use Sir Squeeze A Lot to soak each layer with simple syrup. Let them sit aside for a couple of minutes to fully absorb.

Crumb Coat & Chill → Ice Ice Cakey

Use a small offset spatula to crumb coat each layer with chocolate ganache then let them chill in the fridge. Re ice the sides with more ganache if necessary.

Chocolate FUNdant

Divide your chocolate fondant into 6 (~¾ lbs per). Roll out the fondant a little larger than each cake then drape it over each pancake and smooth out the top. Fold the excess in and under itself around the sides. Use a fondant smoother to smooth out and round the edges - press hard along the top edge.

Texture

When you make pancakes, the edges often get a little bubbly so to resemble that, use a ball tool and turkeyskinator (or a rubber drawer liner) to texture the sides of the pancakes.

Paint

Mix some cocoa powder with vanilla to form a paint then paint the top surface of each pancake. Use a dry brush to add more texture while the paint is wet (you want this to look like the surface that hits the hot pan). Let your cakes chill in the fridge.

Stack 'Em Up!

Stack the pancakes as follows:

  • Lay pancake on tray (bottom)

  • Spread Nutella on top-mainly along the edges

  • Add another pancake

  • Repeat to top

  • Nutella on top

  • Bananas

  • Hershey kisses
