Hatchimal Cake

This chocolate and vanilla cake is ready to hatch!

The anticipEGGtion with this cake was killing me! With Easter right around the corner I’ve been caking up a storm, and decided that a Hatchimal fresh out of its shell was the one thing missing from my table. It took some coaxing to get him to come out but this cake its as adorable as it is delicious!

To make this cake, I started with my two cake favorites, Ultimate Chocolate and Ultimate Vanilla! Filled with Italian Meringue Buttercream, this cake is hatched with perfect flavor. I finished with fun, furry fondant and a paint splattered shell, making it as cute as its real life inspiration.

Baking The Cake:

4lbs of Yo’s Ultimate Chocolate Cake
2lbs Yo’s Ultimate Vanilla Cake (half the 4lb recipe)

Icing The Cake:

Simple Syrup
1 batch of Yo’s Italian Meringue Buttercream
White Candy Melts
Dark and Milk Chocolate Candy Melts

Decorating The Cake:

2lbs white fondant
4oz purple fondant
1oz blue fondant
Black fondant
CMC
Yellow Food Coloring
Purple Food Coloring
Blue Food Coloring

Bake The Cakes

Prepare your batters and divide the chocolate batter into your egg and 6” round pans, and the vanilla batter into your sphere pans. Bake all at 350 degrees. The egg pans take around 1 hour and 10 minutes, and 50 minutes for the sphere pans. Let cakes cool completely before removing from their pans

Level The Cakes

Level both the egg and sphere cakes while they are still in the pan to get a straight cut. Remove the 6” cake from the pan and level with a serrated knife. Remove the caramelization from the vanilla cakes, and carve into a slight oval shape.

Cake Scraps!

Use the cake humps from both halves of the egg cakes and from the 6” pan to make the Hatchimal Shell wider.

Simple Syrup Everything

Drizzle each half of the egg and sphere cakes, along with your 6” round cake in simple syrup.

Build Your Egg

Spread chocolate candy melts on half of the egg, and attach the second half. Use your spatula to remove any excess and fill in the seam. Set aside until chocolate has hardened.

Raise It Up

Trim the egg about an inch from the bottom to give it a flat base to stand on, and place it on top of your 6” round cake. Follow the shape of the egg and carve the 6” cake to match. You want to keep the egg shape but make the cake taller.

Give It A Base

Using candy melts as glue, attach a small round board to the bottom of your egg. Once the chocolate is set flip it right side up and place the whole egg on top.

Crack It Open

Cut off the top ⅓ of your egg cake since you’re making a hatched Hatchimal. You’ll use the ⅓ you remove as the top shell on the Hatchimal’s head.

Crumb Coat and Chill

Use a small offset spatula and Italian Meringue Buttercream to crumb coat your cake and chill for 20 minutes.

Make A Head

Spread white chocolate candy melts on half of your vanilla cake and place the second half on top. Once again, use a spatula to remove any excess, and fill in the seam. Trim one end so there is a flat edge for it to sit on, and attach a cake board using more candy melts.

Crumb Coat and Chill

Just like your egg cake, use a small offset spatula and Italian Meringue Buttercream to crumb coat your Hatchimal head, and chill for 20 minutes.

Ice Your Cakes

After all three parts of the cake are crumb coated and chilled, ice each with a layer of Italian Meringue Buttercream, and chill once more. Now it’s time to get decorating!

Cover In Fondant

To make it look like your Hatchimals body is inside the shell, cover the top half of the bottom portion of your egg in purple fondant, before carefully flipping the cake over. Roll out enough white fondant to drape over the rest of the cake, along with the top portion of the shell.

Add Detail

When trimming the fondant, leave enough extra to create the jagged edge of your Hatchimal’s shell. Using the tip of your knife, cut the fondant in different directions and pull away the excess. Use these pieces to create bits of shell by laying them on a board to dry.

It's Coming To The Head

Now it’s time to work on the Hatchimal head. Cover the vanilla sphere in a thin layer of purple fondant. Smooth the fondant with your hands and trim away the excess. If you have creases on your sphere have no fear! The Hatchimals head will soon be covered in fondant fur.

Fur-Real

Using a clay extruder, create strands of fur using purple fondant softened with shortening. Cut the long strands into fairly equal sections with a paring knife.

Pile It On

To attach the fur to the Hatchimal Head, brush clear piping gel to a small area and apply the fur in patches. Pinch together bundles of fur and trim the bottom before placing on the cake so that the excess fondant doesn’t weigh it down. Leave room for it's eyes and beak.

Time For Styling

Give your Hatchimal it’s signature hairdo by rolling out some blue fondant and use a paring knife to cut out a mohawk like shape. Use clear piping gel to attach, and blend it in with more fur bundles.

Create The Face

Using the same blue fondant, make the Hatchimals beak by forming it in two seperate sections, and use a fondant tool to make indents for nostrils.

To make eyes, roll yellow fondant into a ball and place into a greased round mold. Once chill, remove these from the mold and use a circle cutter to clean up the edges. To create pupils, roll out black fondant very thinly and use a circle cutter. Create a catch light in the same fashion using white fondant. Assemble using piping gel.

Attach The Features

Attach the eyes to the cake with clear piping gel and build up the fur around them. Since the beak will need more support, use a couple of toothpicks to hold the weight.

Add Some Glow

Since the Hatchimal’s eyes glow, paint the eyes with yellow food coloring and clear food grade alcohol to add some shine. Be careful not to smear the black color!

Paint The Shell

Mix white food coloring and a touch of black with clear alcohol and paint the inside of the jagged part of the shell.

Time to splatter the outside of the egg! Ensure your work area is covered, and turn the egg upside down so the jagged section is sitting on the bottom. Dip a paintbrush into your food coloring and flick the bristles. Don’t forget to splatter the top part of the egg as well as the little dried shell pieces! Let everything dry completely before assembling.

Assembly

To support the head and shell top, measure and cut sharpened dowels and insert them into the bottom portion of the Hatchimal shell. Using royal icing as glue, Carefully pick up the fuzzy Hatchimal head and place it on top of the egg bottom. Place more fur bundles where the head meets the shell as needed. Place the top portion of the shell on top of the Hatchimals head, and secure using royal icing. For extra stability, a sharpened dowel can be driven straight down through all 3 pieces.

Presentation

Scatter your broken shell bits around the Hatchimal to make it look like it just hatched, and you’re done! Which cake will you hatch next?
