    Bagel Cakes

    With Painted Toasty Tops and Fondant Poppy & Sesame Seeds!

    Time to wake up, and cake it up everybody! We are going to make a cake that is breakfast-ready. I personally think cake is the perfect breakfast food, but we are going to give this cake a disguise.

    *Makes two Bagel Cakes

    • 2lb Portion Yo's Ultimate Vanilla Cake
    • White Fondant
    • Black Fondant
    • Ivory Food Colouring
    • Clear Food Grade Alcohol (like vodka or rum)
    • Jam (optional)
    • Bagel (as a model)

    Parchment Paper
    Mixing Bowl

    Step 1 - Preheat Oven

    Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line the bottom of two 5" round pans with parchment paper.


    Step 2 - Prepare Cakes

    Prepare Yos Ultimate Vanilla Cake and divide batter between the prepared cake pans.  Bake for 30-35 minutes. Cool completely in their pans.


    Step 3 - Shape Cakes

    Remove your cakes from their pans and begin to shape them. Round the edges of both cakes on the top and bottom with a serrated knife. Now cut a hole in the centre of each of your cakes.


    Step 4 - Crumb Coat, and Chill!

    Crumb coat both cakes with buttercream, and chill.


    Step 5 - Prepare the Bagel Seeds

    Roll your black fondant into little tiny balls and roll your off-white fondant into slightly larger balls. Then flatten each ball with your fingers and pinch one end to form a teardrop shape.


    Step 6 - Ice the Cakes

    Pull your cakes out of the fridge and give them another ice.  Chill them again for 10 minutes. Wet your hands and run them over our cakes, smoothing any ridges out of our buttercream.


    Step 7 - Cover Cakes in Fondant

    Roll out you bagel coloured fondant and cover your cakes. Gently guide your fondant into the centre hole of your bagels.


    Step 8 - Paint the Cakes

    Dilute your ivory food colouring with some alcohol.  Paint around the top surface of your bagels until you reach your desired colour. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle on your seeds.


    Step 9 - Spread the Buttercream Cream Cheese

    When your cakes are ready, cut one bagel in half horizontally. Spread some buttercream on the bottom half of your bagel to represent cream cheese. Place the top half of your bagel on top.


    Tips!

    Lay both bagels on your plate and as an added detail, serve some extra buttercream and jam on the side.
