    Wizard Of Oz Cake

Auntie Em’s House made of Rainbow Vanilla Cake!

We’re off to see the wizard - the wonderful Wizard of Cake! The Wizard of Oz is one of those old, classic movies that I feel I can return to over and over again. It’s so bright and cheery (with the exception of a certain witch), that it’s a caker’s dream. I mean, Munchkinland even has a Lollipop Guild! I have respect for any place that has candy based organizations. I’m honouring this classic film by caking Auntie Em’s Kansas home, filled with bright vanilla cake. Be careful when you’re placing your cake onto its board - you might accidentally squish a witch!

    Prepare Vanilla Cake Batter

Prepare your vanilla cake batter and separate evenly into three mixing bowls. Fold in your food colouring until your batter is vibrantly coloured. Pour batters into your prepared cake pans. Bake for 35-40 minutes at 350 degrees or until a toothpick comes out clean.

    Level Cakes

Remove your cakes from their pans, and level them with a serrated knife and ruler. Remove the caramelization from the bottom and sides. Cut each cake into three equal slabs.

    Simple Syrup Cakes

Give all of your cakes a simple syrup shower and allow it to soak in. Stack the cakes in alternating colours, filling each layer with Italian meringue buttercream as you go. Chill you cake.

    Carve Roof

Remove from fridge, and mark the center of the top of the cake using a ruler. Then mark the same height, where you want your roof to end its slope, on each side. Guide your serrated knife diagonally along these markers to give your house a roof.

Crumb Coat and Chill Bun Cakes

Crumb coat the entire cake and chill. Once buttercream is firm, give your cake another ice, and return to fridge.

    Roll Out White Fondant

Measure your house cake, and roll out white slabs of fondant, ⅛ inch thick, to cover all four sides of your cake. Cut out two slabs of fondant that would fit the sides of the house, cutting them a bit bigger than the actual measurements. Place your fondant siding slabs onto the house, and trim flush to the cake with a ruler and sharp knife.

    Cut Roof Siding

Cut longer slabs of white fondant for the front and back, again using a sculpting tool and ruler to create a siding pattern. Take a small square square cutter to make the edges look jagged. Add the fondant to the house, and trim along the angle of the roof.

    Roll Out Chocolate Fondant

To create the roof out of brown fondant, roll out a large slab of fondant to ⅛ inch thick. Use a paring knife to mark out the pattern of old, weathered boards. Mark very light slashes in your brown fondant, running diagonally in both directions. Add to the roof with a bit of clear piping gel, allow them to overlap slightly and hang at uneven angles.

    Prepare Windows and Doors

Roll out some more brown fondant and a bit of black fondant. Cut the inside of the windows out from your black fondant using a rectangle. Mark the brown fondant in the same manner as the roof. Cut out a door, and several strips to become window frames and panes. Add to the house with a little bit of piping gel.

Cover Cake Board in Game Pieces

To honour the Wizard of Oz Magic Match Game (thanks again for sponsoring this episode!), I wanted my cake board to be a game board. To give it a checkerboard effect, I painted every second square with clear piping gel diluted with a bit of water. Make the game pieces from the Magic Match game with an assortment of molds (links are all in my parsel shop).

    Paint Bricks

To give them a bit more Emerald City glamour, paint the bricks, emeralds, and stars with lustre dusts.

    Add Gumpaste Dorothy!

Roll out two legs using white gumpaste. Cut thin strips of black fondant with your strip cutter, and wrap them around your legs, applying with a bit of clear piping gel. Use red fondant with a bit of CMC to shape my shoes. Then cover in red disco dust. Note that disco dust isn’t really edible, so get those shoes nice and glittery, but don’t eat them.

    Congratulations!
