I've seen tie dye everywhere this year - sweatshirts, sweatpants, face masks, PopSockets ;), you name it! But something was missing... a tie dye CAKE!

I transformed my classic vanilla cake recipe using vibrant yellow, pink, teal, violet, and green to make a gorgeous marbled tie dye pattern! Best part is that it is super easy to achieve and is the perfect way to add an extra colorful surprise to any birthday cake.

  • 2.5lbs of Yo's Ultimate Vanilla Cake
  • Gel food coloring: yellow, pink, teal, violet, green

Read It!

  • Preheat the oven to 350F. Line the bottom of each cake pan with parchment paper.

  • Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a medium bowl and whisk together. Set aside.

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter, sugar, and vanilla on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 8 minutes.

  • Add the eggs, two at a time, beating until each addition is incorporated before adding the next. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula when necessary.

  • Add the flour mixture in four parts, alternating with the milk in three parts, beating just until each addition is incorporated before adding the next; do not overmix.

  • Divide your batter into 5 bowls then color each part yellow, pink, teal, violet, and green. Dollop portions of each color into your pan then drag a knife through the batter vertically and horizontally - be sure not to overmix, until you are satisfied with the look. 

  • Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and spread it so that it is smooth in the pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through.
