Pop Art Justice League Cake

It’s a PLANE, no… it’s a TRAIN… NO! It’s a CAKE!!

Whether you're a fan of DC or Marvel, you have to admit Super Heros (like Cake!) can turn a dull day fun! And recently, there are Super Heros everywhere, and my son LOVES them! That’s why for his birthday I decided to make a Pop Art Justice League Cake!

To make my Justice League Cake, I made my son’s favourite: Chocolate Banana! That’s 18lbs of Yo’s Ultimate Chocolate Cake and Yo's Banana Cake, iced with Italian Meringue Buttercream covered with Blue, Red, and Yellow fondant. I decorated three tiers of cake to look like three dimensional comic block panels! They’re PUNCHY and vibrant!

Bake Chocolate & Banana Cakes

Prepare 18 lbs of Yo’s Ultimate Chocolate Cake and Yo's Banana Cake! For times and quantities check the ingredients breakdown! Bake each cake at 350 degrees, for the designated amount of time or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool cakes completely in their pans sitting on a wire rack.

Note: For Chocolate Cake portions follow the chart in the recipe!

Prepare Buttercream

Prepare your Italian Meringue Buttercream. Once your buttercream is prepared, set your bowl aside at room temperature.

Prepare Simple Syrup

Prepare your simple syrup and set aside at room temperature.

Level Cakes

Once your chocolate and banana cakes are completely cool, remove them from their pans. Flip your banana cakes over and cut off all the caramelization from the bottoms as well as tops. You can leave your chocolate bottoms on! Once all cakes are levelled cut all the cakes into 2 layers. Set aside.

It’s Simple!

Shower all of your 15 cake layers with simple syrup. Allow the simple syrup to soak in completely before moving on to the next step.

Stack Your Layers

Sandwich your chocolate and banana cakes together using Italian Meringue Buttercream. After stacking the tier (according to their size), use the buttercream that comes seeping out the side to crumb coat all around and on top. Chill cake in the fridge to allow the buttercream to set.

Ice & Chill

Remove your cake from the fridge and ice again using your Italian Buttercream. Using your bench scraper, smooth out any ridges! Chill for another 20 minutes.

Cover Cakes

It’s time for fondant! To keep these cakes nice and square, roll your fondant into sheets and apply it in sections.You will need to roll out five sheets of each colour of fondant.

Start with the bottom tier, which is the largest square cake, and cover this cake in yellow fondant. Cover two opposite sides first and trim the sides. Add and trim these pieces on the cake, to make them a perfect square! Repeat for the last two opposing sides! On top, use your last piece of yellow fondant and with a set square cut a perfect 90° angle on one end of the square of fondant. Add this piece to the top of the cake, and then use a ruler and sharp paring knife to trim the left over two sides flush to the cake.

Repeat process for your two remaining tiers! If you want to follow along with me, cover your middle tier in blue fondant and the last tier in red.

Frame your Fondant

Like in a comic book you want to make your cake look BOLD and PUNCHY! To create your Comic Panels, roll out some black fondant nice and thin and then with a ruler and paring knife cut a whole bunch of quarter inch strips. Attach them to the edges of your cake by brushing some clear piping gel on the backs. Where the strips overlap, use your sharp paring knife to trim

Making a Scene

It’s time to lay the scene of your Super Hero world within each panel you’ve created.

Roll out some more black fondant. Find a cityscape online and print it out to create a template. Lay this template down on your black fondant and with your paring knife, carefully cut the cityscape out! Repeat this process for all four sides! I’ll be honest I didn’t do the back, because no one is seeing the back of the cake, but you can do as many or as little of your panels as you’d like!

Define the Scene

To create some definition in your scene, you can score the lines between the buildings like I did! It’s simple, take your ruler and the sharp tip of your paring knife, push and drag the tip (not hard enough to cut the fondant all the way through) to create these defined lines. You can go one step further and use a food colouring marker, in black, to draw over those score lines. This will help them stand out!

Light Your Cityscape

This night time cityscape needs some light in it! Use a scrip cutter to cut out different sized lines of gum paste. You can make several little windows at once, by using your Strip Cutter two different ways! Brush some more clear piping gel on the back and stick them onto your buildings! To add your cityscapes to the your cake panels, spread piping gel on the back, and slowly lift them up and gently press them against the cakes.

Dowel and Stack those Cakes!

Each cake is built on a board, which no one will see, but it gives your cake some stability! We’re about ready to stack them! These boards allow you to add dowels to give support to each cake. Cut the dowels flush to each tier of cake, and then press them straight down. Using some royal icing, spread a little layer on the top of your tiers and stack them, biggest to smallest.

BAM, POW, WOW!!

The sounds in a comic are REALLY loud and written out for you! So of course they needed to be included in this cake.

To get this effect for your cake, roll out some more yellow, blue and red fondant. Also roll out some more white gums paste. With this white gum paste, using Quick Sticks, cut out the words: Bang, Pow and Crash!

Lay each word out onto cardboard, and with a pencil, draw your sound burst template. Once you’re happy with your templates, cut them out and lay it on one of your colours. Cut the shape out in your first colour out and then lay it on one of your other colours around it, making the shape slightly bigger. This will create a border!

Final Words

Finally, it's almost time to add your letters. Before you do, outline them with a black food colour marker! Using some more clear piping gel, attach your letters to your sound burst! Spread a thin layer of royal icing to the backs of your sound bursts and attach them to your cake at angles!
