    Pink Construction Hat

Safety is the number one priority with this pink vanilla cake!

It’s time to hitch up your pink tool belt, and add a few new skills to your repertoire with this good-cause cake! Being that I am the cake architect, it seemed only fitting that I repliCAKE some safety gear, and show my support for the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build- an initiative that provides women with the opportunity to take a proactive step in serving their communities, bringing Girl Power strength together to help others!

Constructing this hard hat started with 12lbs of my Ultimate Vanilla Cake dyed the perfect shade of pink, and layered up with Italian Meringue Buttercream. Then I had to bust out my ruler to measure up all of the safety features this hat has to offer, and reconstruct them with some pink fondant! The finishing touch on this cake is a handmade Habitat for Humanity gumpaste decal.

    Bake Your Cakes

Bake 12lbs of Yo’s Ultimate Vanilla Cake dyed pink in 4 9” round pans at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cakes cool completely before removing from their pans.

    Level Up

Level your cakes, removing the caramelization from the bottom.

    Simple Syrup

With the help of Sir Squeeze, shower your cakes with simple syrup, and let soak in for 10 minutes before stacking your cakes.

    Stack Stack Stack Stack

Stack your cakes with Italian Meringue Buttercream, and chill for 20 minutes before carving.

    Carving Time

Using a template, carve your cake into an oval, rounding down the edges as you go. Don’t worry about the brim/lip of the hard hat at this time. Also take this time to carve a slight indent around the base of your cake.

    Crumb Coat & Chill

Crumb coat your cake using more Italian Meringue Buttercream and chill for 20 minutes

    Ice Ice Baby

Once your crumb coat is completely chilled it’s time to ice your cake with more buttercream, making it as smooth as possible, and pop it back in the fridge for another 20 minutes to firm up.

Put On Your Thinking (Hard) Hat

While your cake is chilling, begin constructing the details of your hat using pink fondant mixed with CMC to stiffen it slightly. Measure the bands on the center of your hat, and details on the sides to roll fondant to the same thickness, setting it in the fridge to firm up so you can achieve nice clean cuts. Use a sharp knife and a ruler to cut out the pieces you will need. Place your pieces back in the fridge while you work on the rest of your cake.

Note: To see how I get detailed, watch my video here

    Addressing The Indent

Thinly roll out 2 bands of grey gumpaste to cover the indent carved into the bottom of your cake. Wrap them around the base of your cake, and trim into place.

    Brimming With Excitement

Roll out a cord of pink fondant mixed with CMC, and use a fondant rolling pin to create a band that is thinner at the front and thicker at the back. Wrap it around the front of your cake on a cake board, and gently push it in place. If it’s still slightly too thick at the front, use your rolling pin to thin it out. Use a template (or your hat model!) to cut out the shape of the brim.

    Smooth Operator

If there are any ridges on your cake, smooth them out with more buttercream before placing on your details.

    It's All In The Details

Using a fabric measuring tape to assist, add your fondant detail pieces to your hat. To adhere your top bands to one another, brush on a little bit of clear piping gel. Add a little more buttercream to blend the bands into your hat.

    Get Loopy

Roll out some more pink CMC fondant to create the loops on the side of your construction hat. A letter I cutter is the perfect shape to achieve these, and a #3 piping tip can be used to punch out the hole. To form them at a 90 degree angle, grease the side of a square cake pan and push your loops against it, forming the shape.

Note: See how I get my loops here in my video

    Take Cover

Roll hot pink fondant (without the CMC) nice and thin, then pick up on a french rolling pin and drape over your cake. Work quickly with your fingertips to smooth the fondant over the details that were just created, and into all of the nooks and crannies. Trim away some of the excess, leaving enough extra to create the lip of your hat

    Give It Lip

Once again, take your fabric measuring tape to ensure everything remains symmetrical, and trim the remaining excess from around your cake leaving a lip. Feel free to chill your cake before taking on this step!

    Every Day I'm Extrudin'

Soften up some more fondant with vegetable shortening, and extrude a thin band to create the edge on the lip off your hat. If you feel it is too thick, chill your cake before trimming away the excess.

    It's All In The Details

Recreate the 2 cutouts on either side of your hat using a fondant tool.

    Branding Is Key

Thinly roll out some white gumpaste, and with a print out of the logo, gently trace around all of the shapes. You don’t want your gumpaste to set so it can still take to the curve of your hat! Fill in the shapes with food colouring markers, and place in the fridge so the ink can dry.

    Shine On!

Mix the same pink food colouring that was used in your batter with some clear food grade alcohol, and paint it over your cake to shine everything up! Don’t forget to add the same treatment to the little loops that will be attached to your cake.

    Final Touch

Using a small dab of clear piping gel, add the loops to your cake right where they sit on your model hat.

    Congratulations!
