    Cabbage Patch Kids Cake

    A One-Of-A-Kind Cake!

What do Cabbage Patch Kids and cake have in common? They are always one-of-a-kind! This Cabbage Patch Kid cake was inspired by my doll, Eva Layla who is absolutely adorable and quite the fashionista… She also just happens to look like me! Cabbage Patch Kids are known for being unique so personalize yours and have fun with your doll!

To make my Cabbage Patch Kid Cake, I began by making 4lbs of my Ultimate Vanilla Cake and one batch of Sculpting Rice Krispies. Each layer in this cake is stacked with a sweet Italian Meringue Buttercream making it extra sweet and smooth. This cake is also completed with Eva’s colourful outfit made out of fondant and topped off with the signature Cabbage Patch Kids shoe logo. This Cabbage Patch Doll is extra unique!

Meet Eva Layla on my YouTube Channel here.

    Bake Your Cakes

To make this Eva Layla Cabbage Patch Kid cake, begin by making 4lbs of my Ultimate Vanilla Cake. Divide your batter evenly into four 5” round pans lined with parchment paper then bake each for 50 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Level and Decaramelize

Remove your cakes from their pans, level, and cut away the caramelization from the bottoms.

    Layer Up!

Put two cakes aside then cut the remaining two into 2 equal layers creating 4 layers.

    Keep It Simple

Using Sir Squeeze, add simple syrup to your four cut layers of cake then let them sit for a couple minutes to absorb.

    Fill & Stack

To create the doll’s body, stack the four layers of cake with IMBC in between each then let it chill in the refrigerator.

    Carve the Legs

It’s time to move onto the two other cakes that were put aside earlier. Cut each in half down the middle creating 4 semi circles. These will make the legs of the Cabbage Patch Doll so carve the lower half of her leg out of one semi-circle, then the thigh out of the other half semi-circle. Next, carve out the indents on the doll’s legs to give more definition and shape then repeat this making two full legs.

TIP: If you have an actual Cabbage Patch Kid Doll, use them as a guide to get exact measurements.

    Keep it Simple!

Using Sir Squeeze A Lot again, add simple syrup to the legs you just carved out then let them sit for a couple minutes to absorb.

    Carve the Body

Remove the cakes you stacked earlier from the fridge and begin to carve out the shape of the doll’s body. Use a circle cutter at the top as a guide for how big you want her neck to be then begin shaping from that point outwards to ensure that you have enough cake width to support her head. You will also be removing all of the caramelization as you do this.

    Crumb Coat and Chill

Once you are happy with the shape of your doll’s legs and body, it’s time to crumb coat all of the parts with IMBC then chill until firm.

    Rice Krispies

The head and arms will be made out of sculpting Rice Krispy so that they are light enough to be held up. Whip up an entire batch of my Sculpting Rice Krispy recipe – though you will not need all of it, it’s good to have extra.

    Moulding the Head

With your Sculpting Rice Krispy, begin moulding the shape of her head (using approximately a third of your batch). The head is almost a perfect oval; however, she has defined cheekbones so to form larger cheekbones and her chin, take some extra Rice Krispy and add it onto her face then smooth out the edges using a small rolling pin.

    Moulding the Arms

With more of your Rice Krispy, begin moulding her two arms (with her hands) – making sure they are the same size.

TIP: Mould both arms at the same time to make sure they are identical.

    Finessing

Just to perfect the shape of her face and arms, use a small serrated knife to smooth out any bumps or edges. You can also use a small sculpting tool to indent where her eyes should go or to help define any curves.

    Crumb Coat and Chill

Once you are happy with the shapes of your doll’s head and arms, crumb coat the pieces with IMBC and let them chill.

    Ice Ice Cakey!

Now that all the parts have been chilled, it’s time to ice all of them with some more IMBC.

    FUNdant

Colour some fondant to the same colour as Eva’s skin tone then roll it out and cover all of the separate parts (except for the head) with the same fondant. For her body, you may get some creasing at the bottom which is alright as her clothes will cover them up. For the legs and arms, use a sculpting tool to add her bend dimples where appropriate. Also use a sculpting tool to create little toes on her feet and fingers on her hands. Flip the legs and arms over onto a sponge and carefully fold over the fondant then cut the excess away and smooth it out. There will be a seam but it will be under the limbs, therefore, will not show. Lastly, use another sculpting tool to create her finger indents.

    Lips

Roll out a teeny bit of fondant and create a small cord of fondant to create her bottom lip. She doesn’t have a defined upper lip so create a sort of flat piece of fondant with a raised lip at the bottom so that it blends into the rest of her face smoothly. Add an indent over her lip as well with a sculpting tool.

    Head Support

Cut out a small foam board with the width of her neck then drive a dowel through the board and into the bottom of her head. Glue the board to the bottom using some royal icing.

    FUNdant

Roll out some more of the same skin-coloured fondant and drape it over her head. Ensure that you drape the fondant from the front to back so that the gathering and seam will be at the back of her head. Use a sculpting tool to redefine her lips that you made in the last step through the fondant.

    Semi Assembly

Place Eva’s body on a cake board then add her legs. You may need a circle cutter to cut off the ends to make them fit better to her body. Add a dowel through the middle of her body to hold up her head.

    Eva's Shorts

Roll out some light pink, hot pink, and yellow fondant very thinly. Then use various heart and flower shaped plunger cutters to cut out various parts of the pattern on her clothes.

    Eva's Shorts pt. 2

Roll out the navy-blue fondant then glue on the little shapes you cut out in the previous step onto the surface of the fondant using clear piping gel.

NOTE: Make sure you do this step quickly so that your fondant doesn’t dry out or else it will crack when you wrap it around the Body.

    Eva's Shorts pt. 3

To prevent your fondant from cracking, cut the patterned fondant into panels then use an overstitch tool to create stitching towards the bottom edges of her shorts. Next, carefully drape them onto her legs and lower body. Use excess rolled out navy-blue fondant to hide various gaps and try to make it as seamless as possible.

    Assembly Prep

Use some oval cutters and lightly mark off where you want Eva’s arms to go on her body. This will make it easier for you when you attach her arms.

    Eva's Top

Roll out some more pink fondant for Eva’s top. Wrap your fondant around the cake to figure out where the cut-outs of her shirt must go. Take the pink fondant off of her body then lay it flat. Use a 12” round pan to cut a round edge on the bottom of her shirt so that it doesn’t look warped. Next, use a circle cutter to cut out the neck hole then the same oval cutter you used to mark off where her arms would go to cut out two arm holes from the pink fondant. Use an overstitch tool to add stitching to the bottom of Eva’s top.

    Eva's Top pt. 2

Once you have done so, flip it over and add some clear piping gel then glue it onto the front of her body making sure that the arm holes line up as well as the neck hole with the dowel directly in the centre. Use a small paring knife to cut a clean seam on both sides right through the middle.

    Eva's Top pt. 3

To create the back of Eva’s shirt, repeat the exact same steps then cut the seams on the side to meet the seams of the front piece of her shirt.

TIP: Use the oval cutters if necessary, to cut off any excess fondant from the arm holes.

    Top Tie

To create the tie on the bottom of Eva’s top, use an eye-shaped cuter and cut out two shapes from the same pink fondant. Roll them a little bit thinner then fold them in on one end each. For the centre knot, cut out two pink strips and lay them over the centre to attach the two pieces together and glue it onto the bottom of the shirt using clear piping gel.

    Assembly

Add the stitch details along the sides of Eva’s arms using your overstitch tool. Next, bend a wire in half then stick one half into Eva’s arm and the other half into her body with a little bit of royal icing between to secure her arm in place.

    It's All in the Details

Roll out some more pink fondant then cut it into 3 strips and use the overstitch tool to add stitching along one edge of each strip. Place the strips along both the arm holes of her top as well as around the neckline then cut away the excess making clean seams.

    Eva's Nose and Ears

To make Eva’s button nose, roll a little bit of skin-coloured fondant into a small oval then make some indents in it using a sculpting tool. Using the same fondant, roll out a larger ball then cut it in half. Mould the two halves to create her ears using sculpting tools to add details – try to make them as identical to one another as possible. Glue her nose and ears onto her head using some clear piping gel.

    Eva's Eyes

Create templates for Eva’s eyes then roll out some white and black fondant and cut out the shapes of her eyes as well as the pupils. Use some brown food colouring to paint on the details of her iris’. Next, use a piping tip to cut out more black fondant as well as a catch-light to place on top of your draw on irises.

NOTE: If you are having trouble drawing the details of her eyes on, you can just use the fondant and skip the painting step.

    Eyebrows and Eyelashes

Using the eyes’ templates you used in the previous step, draw on eyelashes and eyebrows around the template with a brown food colouring marker. Once you have done so, assemble Eva’s eyes using clear piping gel then glue them to her face with more clear piping gel – aligning them to the eyelashes and eyebrows.

    Assembly

Spread a little bit of royal icing around the dowel of Eva’s neck then very carefully, line her head up and gently press it in. Use a soft sponge in your hand to avoid any handprints when pressing her head into place.

    Hair pt. 1

Cut out a black circle of fondant to fit the back of Eva’s head then trim away the front edge so that her face isn’t covered. This will act as a base for the rest of her hair so that her scalp doesn’t peak through beneath her ponytail. Soften some of your black fondant with vegetable shortening then clay extrude really thin cords. Using clear piping gel, glue those thin cords to the base of her hair that you just made from the front edge to the back.

    Hair pt. 2

Create one solid piece of fondant that will act as her ponytail and glue it onto the back of her head securing it with some wiring.

    Headband pt. 1

To create the headband, repeat the same steps in prepping the fondant for Eva’s shorts – roll out some navy fondant then decorate with various pink, white, and blue shapes. Cut a band out then lay it over some bamboo skewers and press it on top to get a sort of ruffled look to the band. Lastly, add the stitch detailing down the middle of the headband and apply it to the front of her hairline with clear piping gel.

    Headband pt. 2

Repeat the same steps as you did with the bow on Eva's shirt but with the excess pieces of fondant you created for her headband to create a bow.  Glue it on with some clear piping gel.

    More Hair

Clay extrude more fondant in longer strands then glue it onto the base of her ponytail from top to bottom. Let the edges hang loose to give a more natural look. You can add as much as you want until you are satisfied with the thickness of her ponytail.

    Eva's Shoes

Roll out two thick pieces of fondant – thinner on one end and thicker on the other to create the wedged sole of her shoes. Use Eva’s shoes as embossers to create an impression of the Cabbage Patch Kids logo on the bottom of her shoe. User an oval cutter to cut out her shoe around the impression then let them chill and set.

NOTE: If you do not have an actual doll with you, you can just create the same wedge and cut it out with a circle cutter.  It'll look relatively the same just without the extra logo detail.

    Eva's Shoes pt. 2

Once the shoe soles have set, glue them to the bottom of her feet with clear piping gel. Next, cut out strips of pink fondant and add one thicker band to the centre in the opposite direction to bind them all together. Now take the ends of the strips and wrap them around the shoe while they are on her foot to create the strappy sandal look. Trim the edges with a piping tip and glue them down with dabs of clear piping gel. Use a small piping tip to create small circles and glue them to the ends of each strap along the edge of her shoe soles.

    Eva's Blushing!

Use a soft brush and a powdered pink food colouring to add a little bit of blush to Eva’s cheeks as well as the tip of her nose.
