1. Pick A Theme
You want to start with a theme - in this case Valentine’s Day - and pick a color scheme. This will keep your board from looking messy. Maybe you just want dark reds, chocolate browns and whites, or perhaps you want something more playful like pastel pinks, greens and purples. With your theme in mind, you can head on to the fun step - shopping for everything that matches your vision!
2. Find an Anchor
Choose an anchor dish - this will be your main focus on the board. Start from there first, and work outward, building candy around it. We recommend using something that will stand out and a few “co-anchors” to add some depth to your display. On these boards Gracie uses heart shaped ramekins as a nice focal point.
3. Embrace Variety
Use lots of different textures, shapes, and sizes! Squares of chocolate wrapped in pretty foil, sugared jube jubes, lollipops and novelty candy like hot lips and conversation hearts. Visually this helps avoid your board looking like one big pile of the same candy.
4. Experiment! It’s All About Presentation!
Be creative with how you prevent all your candy from spilling into one another. Here Gracie uses heart-shaped cookie cutters to contain brightly colored gumballs and chocolate covered Oreos as a border to prevent runaway jube jubes! Fan some candy out neatly, pile others and don’t be afraid to neatly stack items like candied pretzels and squares of chocolate!
5. Look For Different Flavors
Offer up something for everyone! Candy, chocolate, sweet, sour and maybe something with a touch of salt! This is super key. The point of any charcuterie board is to offer up variety, and things that compliment one another - a salty pretzel with a square of chocolate and a few mini marshmallows thrown in make for an amazing mix of flavours!
